A Closer Look At The Columba 26 inch Folding Bike…

The Columba 26 inch Folding Bike is built around a steel frame as opposed to an aluminum one. Steel frame bikes provide a smoother and more comfortable ride and are more flexible which enhances comfort especially when riding long distances, plus steel is also denser and stronger than aluminum and better at absorbing vibration allowing it to take harder knocks without becoming damaged.

This bikes 26″ inch wheels give better acceleration and make this bike fantastic for climbing short and steep hills, as well as for fast flowing, quick turning trail riding. Bikes with 26″ wheels also perform better over bumps, potholes and curbs than bikes with smaller wheels, however remember that this bike has no suspension or shocks and so not really designed for mountain bike style riding.

The Shimano 18-speed shifter and derailleur give really smooth and accurate changing and are a great help when it come to adapting from smooth and flat to hilly terrain. The Shimano twist grip shifter is easy and comfortable to use, and the gears are smooth shifting and very responsive for a good smooth ride on paved roads and paths as well as on tracks and trails.

With this bike you also get alloy front and rear V-brakes which have the advantage of being very lightweight, as well as being easy and cheap to maintain and replace, even on the go. This type of brakes differ from disc brakes by not putting any stress or strain on the hubs or spokes during braking plus the don’t get in the way of the kickstand. They are strong and responsive and do give you plenty of stopping power when you need it, however they are slightly less effective than disc brakes in wet and muddy conditions. but more than make up for it by being more aerodynamic allowing for faster acceleration and easier cruising.

This Columba folding bike also features a set of Kenda 26″x 1.5″ road tires which give you that all important good traction and make cornering quicker. These tires are also designed to require less effort when pedaling and give you a smoother ride. You will also notice that they give a pretty good ride on rough roads as well as paved streets and are also good for riding in heavy rain and on soft surfaces like snow too. All of this makes these great tires for commuting, trail riding, and handling the odd pothole, and they are pretty durable too, however for serious mountain biking you may need to upgrade to tires designed for harsher terrain types.

For added comfort and control this bike has a quick removable front handlebar stem. this allows you top adjust the height of the handlebar to suit your own individual riding position and save your hands, wrists and forearms from suffering any unnecessary stresses and strains while riding, plus it also gives you the option to change the handlebar altogether for one with different angle or bend and although this may seem like only a small change, it’s easily enough to transform a good bike into a great bike.

And fitted to the handlebar there is a PVC black bell which allows you to let other cyclists, pedestrians and road users know you’re around so they can keep an eye out for you and avoid any unnecessary accidents.

The Columba folding bikes front and rear steel hubs give pretty good strength and durability and allow the wheels to move freely and stably making for a smoother and more comfortable ride, and the steel kickstand allows to to stand the bike stably when there is nothing around to lean it up against while you grab a breather, a coffee, or take some snaps of your journey.

How Does The Columba 26 inch Folding Bike Ride?

We really like how this folding bike rides, it’s smooth and solid and a great ride especially for riders who are new to folding bikes. The bike rides just like a regular mountain bike, the gears and brakes work well-no shuddering or jerking and the hand grips are really comfortable and make riding for long distances really easy on your hands and wrists, however you may not feel the same way about the seat. The seat does begin to get a little hard after 5-6 miles and so you may need to replace the seat with a bigger and more comfortable one, or at least a gel seat cover, if you intend riding on long journeys.

In terms of build and strength, this bike is easily rigid enough for an enjoyable ride whether you are using it around town for commuting to work or school, or riding on mountain trails. If you intend riding on rougher terrain you may want to swap the tires out for rough terrain tires as this bike comes fitted with road tires. You may also want to keep in mind that this bike has no suspension either so you will be in for a bumpy ride on very uneven ground.

As you would probably expect from Shimano, the gear shifting is responsive, accurate and very smooth-no clunking or jerking, and the gears are also great for taking the effort out of riding up hills, plus they also do a great job of helping you pick up speed easily on the flat, which comes in handy for speedy commutes. The gears also make trail riding fun and easy however you will notice the lack of suspension on rougher tracks and trails.

Easy to fold and unfold, takes less than a minute either way, you could probably do it in under 30 seconds with practice. At 35 lbs it is a little heavy to be carrying around for long but having said that we found it to be easy to take on the bus, subway, or train which makes it perfect for commutes.

At the end of the day what you get is a well made and solid folding bike which looks good, is pretty durable, gives a nice smooth, and pretty fast ride and basically does everything it’s supposed to.

At the time of putting this review together the Columba 26 inch Folding Bike is getting some pretty good feedback from people who are buying it right now on Amazon.com. It has an average feedback score of 4.1 out of 5 stars, which is pretty good, and that’s from 137 customer ratings too which shows that a lot of people are buying it, and more importantly they are liking it, in fact 54% of them give it the full 5 out of 5 stars, and another 18% give it 4 out of 5.

The things they seem to be the most impressed with are the bikes quick and easy folding feature which allows it to be stored away in small spaces, the sturdy frame and the smooth ride which make it enjoyable to use, plus how easy it is to take with you in a car trunk or on public transport. The Stowabike 26″ Folding MTB V2 is a pretty decent quality folding mountain bike for the price. It is not the best bike for hardcore mountain bike enthusiasts, but for casual weekend trail riders, and riders who enjoy the occasional run around town, to and from the store, and work and college commuters who don’t intend to hammer the bike every chance they get, it’s pretty good.

The bikes 26″ folding frame is made from cast iron which makes it heavier and slightly less portable than some of its competitors. Being made from cast iron does give the frame the added advantages of being incredibly tough and durable as well as being rust and corrosion resistant, and also contributes towards a more comfortable ride.

The front steel suspension fork may not be the best in the world however it still does a pretty good job of cushioning against lumps, bumps and potholes for a smoother and more comfortable ride which is also easier on your hands, wrists, and forearms, especially when riding on tougher terrain.

The 18-speed gearing is pretty much a must on a bike the size of the Stowabike 26″ Folding MTB V2 is good, it’s surprisingly smooth and accurate and gives the bike some decent terrain adaptability when you need it, thus saving your legs from having to work any harder than necessary.

The bikes dual suspension comes in really handy on tough trails to make your ride really quite comfortable, and on city streets and other paved surfaces the ride is even smoother, in fact in our opinion the gears and suspension together make urban riding more like urban floating, which is pretty remarkable for a folding bike at this price point.

Performance…

For people who aren’t hardcore mountain bikers and just want a bike to go to for a leisurely coast through the neighborhood, to the park and mountain trails for a ride and save on storage space, this bike is just fine, and although we wouldn’t recommend it for trails with ratings of “very difficult” and “extreme”, this is a great bike for the trails, it handles very well on stone roads, and it is responsive and easy to handle on city streets for commutes.

This bike is pretty easy to assemble, although the instructions do leave a lot to be desired, and assembly isn’t really much more than putting air in the tires, fitting the front wheel, seat and handlebars and performing a few minor adjustments to the brakes and gears and can all be done in 15 minutes or less-tools are included.

One thing we should point out here is that the Stowabike 26″ MTB V2 is only really suitable for riders from 5 ft 5 in to 6 ft 1 in tall, this is due to the length of the seatpost, you can of course cut it down to suit if you like, otherwise we recommend going for a different folding mountain bike which fits you.

Other than that, this is a pretty strong folding bike that’s been built to last, it feels sturdy when you get on and not like a cheap toy that’s going to snap in half when you go over your first bump.

Riding is nice and smooth, the gears seem to take a little while to break in but once they have they shift really smoothly and deal really well with uneven surfaces, they make climbing hills easy and handle changes in terrain smoothly and without any problems. You get a really smooth ride on paved surfaces, the bike picks up speed pretty quickly and is easy to handle despite its weight.

The Stowabikes brakes aren’t the best in the world to be honest, nor the worst either and they do stop the bike which is the important thing.

The suspension performs pretty well on bumpy terrain, probably better than you would normally expect from a bike at this price point. The rear shocks are a major plus and handle ruts and potholes nicely. The bike thick tires help here too and give a pretty decent grip on and off-road.

The only real drawback with this bike is that the seat isn’t exactly super comfortable, especially for long distances, however it does give you the support you need and so a gel seat cover will probably remedy this rather than shelling out for another seat.

All-in-all we found the Stowabike 26″ MTB V2 to be a low-cost functional folding mountain bike that’s also great for commuting and zipping through shortcuts where cars can’t go, and that folds down easily to save on storage space in the shed, garage or car trunk, and is easy enough to take on public transport.

And although some of the components could be better quality, at this price point your’e still getting a lot of bike for your money and so this is still one to check out, especially if you’re buying on a budget.

If you’re looking for an easily affordable folding mountain bike to use on moderate to average mountain trails and urban commutes, and that is also a space saver when it comes to storing it away we strongly recommend checking out the Stowabike 26″ MTB V2 on Amazon.com.

This bike has a seriously durable and rust resistant folding frame which should last you for many years to come and its 18-speed gearing is actually made by Shimano so there should be no problems there either.

The dual suspension is also very good at absorbing lumps and bumps and cushioning against potholes and the like so you get a pretty comfortable ride on trails, and a super comfortable ride on paved surfaces which make it a great choice for commutes as well.

The only drawbacks we came across with this bike are that the seat is a bit on the hard side and we think that some of the components like the brake levers are a little cheap, so if your’e wondering why this bike didn’t make it onto our top 10 list, now you know.

That being said, even though this isn’t the best folding mountain bike we have reviewed, this bike is getting plenty of positive feedback on Amazon and for what it costs it is still a bike worth checking out if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, it won’t fall apart underneath you, it’s just not built for hardcore mountain biking, but for everything else it’s a pretty good bike.

Performance…

Despite this bike being heavier than a lot of other folding bikes out there it actually handles pretty well. It’s a basic functional bike that is easy to operate, sturdy, and rides pretty smooth and comfortably, however the seat may take some getting used to for some users as it is a little on the hard side.

You will have no doubt noticed that this bike has no gears meaning in terms of speed, distance and terrain adaptability, with this bike you are well and truly on your own meaning you will only ever be able to travel as fast, as far and climb any hills as well as you are able to pedal.

Having said that, this is a great bike to ride on the flat for city commutes, trips to and from the store- the carry rack is good and sturdy, and general leisure riding or riding around town and taking in the sights. If you are looking for a folding bike for riding long distances, you would do well to bear in mind what we said earlier about the seat as some riders will find it a little hard at first.

You should also bear in mind that this bike is a little heavier than say the Zizzo Via which weighs in at just 27 lbs, and the Zizzo Campo at 28 lbs, so if you need a bike that’s lightweight enough to carry on and off buses, trains and elevators, as well as up and down stairs you may do better with either one of these.

As for folding this bike, it’s really easy to do and once folded down it’s a breeze to store away literally anywhere either in the corner of an office or apartment, in a closet, and it even fits nice and easily into the trunk of an average size car. You also get a pretty cool heavy duty nylon carry bag with a zip fastener to keep it together and protected when folded down.

And secondly, when you’ve finished using it and need to pack it away and take with you until next time, the Scwinn Loop folds down, just as quickly and easily, to a nice and compact 29.5″ x 29″ x 19″, meaning it’s small enough to take with you in your car on camping trips, holidays and days out but without the added expense of a bike-rack.

This bike also handles hills pretty well too, as long as they are not really steep that is, but for slight hills and inclines the 7-speed Shimano gear system is more than adequate. Moving up and down through the gears is nice and smooth, no jerking or clunking, and it’s also pretty stable when tackling hills too.

However, if you live in a particularly hilly area with steeper inclines you may find a folding electric bike gives you an easier ride.

This bike also comes with a heavy duty nylon zip fastening carry bag, handle included to make taking it with you on public transport, or wherever else you want to take it, really easy. The carry bag is pretty tough and durable and protects your folded down bike against the elements, dust, dirt and debris, as well as acting like an anti-theft device by concealing the identity of its contents.

A rear mounted carry rack measuring approximately 12″ x 5″, and which is strong enough to carry a 45 kg load, is a great feature for anyone who may need to pick up a few things from the store while they are out riding or while commuting to or from work or college. Noe that the carry rack is fixed and not removable.

Your Schwinn Loop folding bike also comes with a kickstand which is pretty sturdy indeed, in fact it also works to keep the bike standing upright on steep inclines so there’s no danger of your bike falling over while you take a break from riding.

The folding hinges on this bike are made from solid heavyweight steel, unlike the thin stamped, and minimally welded hinges found on folding bicycles of a lesser quality. The hinges also feature strong locking mechanisms ensuring the bike is strong, safe and secure while in use.

The bike is delivered 95% assemble so there is some ‘assembly’ required before your bike is ready to ride. This is nothing at all to worry about and very easy to do. Front and rear full wrap fenders: these work really well to keep your clothes clean and dry when riding in wet conditions by stopping dirt and water from the tires being blown back and spraying you. They are removable but we wouldn’t recommend taking them off if you want to stay clean.

Light Alloy frame: This makes the bike extremely strong while being very lightweight giving you faster acceleration, greater durability and also making it easier to handle and maneuver, especially on tighter bends.

Front and rear v-brakes: Handlebar mounted, front and rear lever-operated v-brakes do a great job of bringing you to a safe and comfortable stop without threatening to throw you over the handlebars.

Performance…

What’s It Like To Ride? Well, as you might expect when you buy a bike from a company that has been making quality bikes for as long as Schwinn have-around a hundred years in fact, when you purchase a Schwinn Loop Folding Bicycle, or any other Schwinn bike for that matter, you can rest assured that you’re getting one of the best folding bikes around and definitely not buying a piece of junk.

This is a nice, smooth bike which is really easy to get on and off and gives a great ride on fairly even terrain and scenic mountain trails. The only negative we have come across is with the seat, its a bit on the narrow side and some riders may find it a little on the hard side too, especially on uneven ground, so you may want to consider replacing it with a wider seat.

The gear system is great for taking the hard work out of hill climbing and changing up and down is really smooth, as is the braking system. The brake levers are easy to reach and easy to use and don’t require much pressure to bring you to a smooth, safe and controlled stop.

As for the overall feel of the bike it feels solid and sturdy, not like its going to buckle under you at the first sign of stress, while still being light enough to handle easily on corners and over rougher ground.

How Easy Is It To Fold And Unfold? Folding this bicycle down for easy storage or transportation, and folding it back up again to ride the bike really couldn’t be any easier. The actual folding hinge is of top quality construction, not a cheap affair by any means, with a double spring locking mechanism to hold the bike in place. It’s not too heavy either which makes it easier to fold and unfold plus the hinge opens ans closes nice and smoothly.

The only slight drawback we can find is that once folded down, there is nothing included to prevent it fro unfolding, so unless you are using the carry bag you may need something to tie it with.

What Is It Like For Commuting? In a word-BRILLIANT! The Schwinn Loop is zippy and maneuverable enough to get you through even the most stationary of traffic. It folds down small enough to take on a bus, train, car, or in the trunk of a taxi for a partial commute, and once you arrive at work, college or wherever, you can easily stow it under your desk or in any other compact space until you need to fold it out and jump on for the journey home…

A great time and money-saver whichever way you choose to use it!

What’s It Like To Ride On Hills? Again, it’s pretty good, the 7-speed gear system sees to that quite well, as long as the hills aren’t too extreme that is, the bottom line here is that this bike just isn’t designed to go racing up and down steep hills, however when the appropriate gear for the incline you are riding is selected you get a pretty smooth and enjoyable ride but without having to put in the hard work.

The Little Extras. The Schwinn Loop comes with a pretty basic set of extras which are a rear carry rack which comes in handy for trips to the store as well as carrying your bits and bats for a days sightseeing, picnicking or whatever, ans basically anything you would normally need to carry in a backpack.

You also get a nylon, zip fastening carry case with a handle. It’s a bit of a tight fit but your folded bike will fit inside and be protected, not least from prying eyes, however some users have found the zip to be a bit on the flimsy side.

The front and rear fenders do a pretty good job of keeping water, dirt and debris away from your clothing, and the chain guard prevents your pant leg from getting chewed up and covered in grease.

And finally there’s the kickstand which is well made, has a plastic cap on the prop to prevent marking or damaging surfaces, and is strong enough to keep the bike upright even on inclines. A convenient ‘extra’ making it ideal for when you are on and off the bike taking photos, grabbing drinks or an ice cream.

The only other extra we would like to see, and which this bike doesn’t have is a headlight making it safe to ride at night.
